EU Drug Shortage Monitor: Real-Time Shortage Intelligence Across Europe
Project Information
- Category: End-to-End Data Product (Personal Project)
- Scope: 25 European countries + EMA
- Project date: 2026 – ongoing
- Stack: Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, cloud deployment
Description
A platform I designed, built and operate end-to-end that turns fragmented national drug-shortage registers into one comparable, decision-ready view of Europe. It tracks 13,000+ active shortages across 2,000+ molecules, harmonizes every record to WHO ATC codes, and flags cross-country supply risks — the same product and manufacturer running short in several markets at once — before they become the next headline.
Key Achievements
- Automated Data Collection: 30+ scrapers for national medicines agencies (ANSM, AIFA, BASG, SÚKL, Fimea and more) plus EMA — designed to self-heal on changing sources and fail loudly rather than go silently stale.
- Data Harmonization: Normalizes heterogeneous, multilingual records into a single model — WHO ATC classification, molecule matching, translated shortage reasons and manufacturer mapping.
- Supply-Risk Detection: Cross-country logic that surfaces molecules short in many markets simultaneously, with resolution timelines and shortage-reason analytics.
- Interactive Dashboard: Europe heat map, country and ATC filters, watchlists, company search and CSV export — dark and light mode included.
- Production Deployment: FastAPI + PostgreSQL backend running in the cloud with scheduled daily refresh jobs, authentication and monitoring.
- AI-Accelerated Development: Built solo in weeks, not months, using an AI-assisted engineering workflow — a working example of the productivity I help organisations unlock.
